A Droplet of Hope

The foamy, blue waters of the ocean recede,
Revealing silver pebbles that twinkle like stars.
A rust orange crab scuttles out of seaweed,
While the old man plays his lonely guitar.

I gaze out to sea, as the sun sets under the clouds.
In this place I’m a lone wolf without the pack, the crowds.
The salty scent of sea air reaches my nose,
As the grainy sand rubs in between my toes.

But when my eyes scan the horizon, they reach a horrible sight.
A little tern caught in a green plastic net.
Its tail and black-tipped feathers all soaked and wet.
My heart was shattered and I knew it would be hard to sleep tonight.

I ponder about plastic filling up the ocean,
And wonder what would happen if we consume it.
Mimi’s steaming anchovies, with hot, buttery buns.
Would we regret this a bit?

Will all of our planet’s marine life be wiped away?
Would they be filled with trash, our bays?
Will anyone do something? We don’t want any fauna absence.
Then I remembered, one person can make a difference.

I felt:
Downcast
Teary-Eyed
Dismal and
Blue
But I knew that sentence, that saying was true.

So I packed up my courage, my spirit, my grit,
And vowed to not give, surrender, or quit.
As I freed the bird from the obstacle down its road,
The tern peered back with a grateful look, and “Thank you!” it crowed.

I felt something new:
Hope
Strength
Joy
No longer blue.
No more feelings as you’re stuck in glue.

Because there is a light shining in the darkness.
Is it computers? Cell phones? Tablets? It’s us.
We are the hope for the future.
The spark, the glimmer.

The only way to right this wrong,
Is to unite together, and to be strong.
To bring back the dolphin’s bright, wet spray.
This we know, is the only way.
