Thursday, January 21st is National Squirrel Appreciation day! Many of us overlook these small bushy-tailed rodents, but let’s go back to the encyclopedia, and discover ways that our furry friends help our planet.

If you are a squirrel, all that’s on your mind is nuts. Food is very important to squirrels, especially in the winter, when acorns are scarce. They bury many underground, but squirrels don’t have the best memory, and these acorns remain in the soil and grow to be the majestic, tall oak trees we see today. If you have been paying attention in science class, you should remember that plants are responsible for photosynthesis, a process in which plants take in water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide, and turn them into glucose and oxygen. Oxygen is released into the air as a waste product, enabling us to breathe.

The next time you look out the window and see a squirrel scurrying in your yard, remember that these creatures are helping our forests get bigger and keeping our lungs healthier. Appreciate squirrels, I ask you please; they are planting our great oak trees.
