Art Apps

Over quarantine, we’ve had time to work on our hobbies. For me, that was drawing and animating. I feel like I improved a lot in my spare time, and these apps helped me:

  1. IbisPaintX: IbisPaint is a free app that allows you to draw digitally. It offers a wide variety of brushes, colors, rulers, and opacity. You do have to pay to have full access to all brushes, but it allows you to watch an ad to have all brushes available for 18 hours. I find this app very useful, and I’d give it a 10/10.
  2. FlipAClip: This is an animation app that I have been using for a long time and is very useful and basic. You can add, copy, delete frames, add a recording, and use the four different brushes and a wide variety of colors. It also has an onion skin, which allows you to see what you drew on previous frames. This app is free, so it does make you watch ads, and you also need to pay to have the watermark on your completed animation removed. However, this is an awesome, easy app, and I give it another 10/10.
  3. AnimationDesk: This is, yet, another animation app. This one I don’t like quite as much. It is very restricted if you haven’t paid for it. You can only make three sequences (small animation clips) and you have access to a very limited amount of brushes to use. Also, I simply do not like the way it responds to my Apple Pen. I only recommend this because it has two cool additions that FlipAClip does not. (1) You can upload a video and animate it. (2) You can combine sequences into a storyboard. Overall, I would rate this app a 6/10.
  4. Live Collage: This is a photoshop app (bet you were “hoping” for another animation one!) I haven’t used this app a lot, but, from my experience so far, it is very useful. You can insert and trim photos and videos, and add text and color. There aren’t as many restrictions as AnimationDesk, but, once again (*sigh*) there are special features that require a subscription. However, I find that the tools already offered are sufficient. I would rate this app an 8/10.

These are all fun and free apps that, although have limitations, can take you far.
