Animal Crossing New Horizons

It has been just over 6 months since Animal Crossing New Horizons (ACNH) was released. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but the timing of its arrival was perfect because we’re all stuck at home. There have been five previous main Animal Crossing games, including Animal Crossing New Leaf, Animal Crossing Pocket Camp (a mobile game), and Animal Crossing City Folk; but ACNH is the first game for the Nintendo Switch.

For those of you who don’t play ACNH, or have played any of the previous games, Animal Crossing is a game where the entire point is to decorate an island. There are many aspects of the game, including crafting, fossil hunting, and catching bugs and fish. You can also chat with your friends and visit their islands by going to the airport located on your island. People have taken advantage of the game in different ways: holding weddings, graduations, and even funerals in game. There has even been a talk show started up in ACNH, called Animal Talking

ACNH was released on March 20th, and in its first month, it sold over five million digital copies, surpassing the previous record of the most digital units sold in a single month. This title was previously held by Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. By the end March 2020, Nintendo said that over 11.77 million copies (both digital and physical) had been sold, making it, “‘one of the best starts ever for a Nintendo title’”. It now also holds the record for the second best-selling Nintendo Switch game and the best-selling Animal Crossing game. In Japan alone, ACNH sold 1.88 million copies at launch. In North America, it became the best-selling game in March, and the second best-selling game of 2020. ACNH also surpassed the total of all previous games’ life earnings.
