On September 6th, several thieves stole over 7,000 insects and arachnids-90% of the Philadelphia Insectarium’s total animals-estimated to be worth about $40,000-$50,000 in total. The stolen collection included a rare and deadly six-eyed sand spider(above), and this species currently has no available antivenom. The robbers also left blue employee uniforms stuck to the wall with steak knifes, which led law officials in the area to believe that this was an inside job. They then crept out the back of the building with boxes full of the stolen collection. Since the robbery, the museum has set up a GoFundMe page to help collect money to help replace the stolen insects and spiders so that the museum can continue to help people understand and respect insects and arachnids.
