New Teacher Mr. Sinclair

New Teacher Mr. Sinclair

Sarah M., Staff Writer

We have a new 7th and 8th grade English teacher.  His name is Mr. Ben Sinclair.  Mr. Sinclair was born in San Bernardino, California and he grew up in Joshua Tree. He taught Swedish at the University of Wisconsin for two years. He then decided to teach secondary school and after first working as a substitute teacher, he taught 9th grade English last year.

When asked about his hobbies, he said that he enjoys hiking.  Mr. Sinclair said, “I also like backpacking and was able to go on a three-day backpacking trip in Badlands National Park not too long ago.” He also enjoys gardening, reading, playing video games, and taking care of his pets. His pets include a rosy boa, a 17 year old cat, a blue tongued skink, and a Nile monitor lizard. He enjoys running and doing yoga, but has not done any other sports since elementary school.

When asked if he enjoys books he said that he loves to read. Some of his favorite authors include Toni Morrison, George R.R Martin, Gore Vidal, James Baldwin, Hermann Hesse, Neil Gaiman, and Haruki Murakami. He also likes to read poetry.  Out of all the poetry he has read his favorite authors are Karin Boye and Walt Whitman.

He also enjoys watching movies and TV shows. His favorite TV shows include Watchmen on HBO, Breaking Bad, The Handmaid’s Tale, Arrested Development, and the first few seasons of Black Mirror. Some of his favorite movies are Kill Bill, Mean Girls, The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

We are happy that Mr. Sinclair has made Cope his new home. Later in the year he may even teach us all some Swedish.
