Featured Book of the Month

Yes, that is a different name under that familiar title, and yes, I do realize that this is late. Because I want to do Halley justice, I’ve taken care to choose a book that I believe will do this series-of-sorts justice. It’s a story of loss and finding home in the oddest of places.

This month’s F.B.T.O.M. is Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan. The novel’s main character is Willow Chance, a kid unlike others. She’s a genius, in some senses, but that really only means she looks at things from an unusual perspective.

In the beginning of the story, Willow’s adoptive parents unexpectedly get into a car crash, and it thrusts her into a world she doesn’t recognize. Unbeknownst to her, Willow clings to her school counselor and teenage friend, whose family indirectly adopts her and cares for her as the system tries to find Willow a foster family.

This book, a New York Times Bestseller, is Sloan’s third novel, and in my opinion, she did a fantastic job. The theme of the book is bittersweet, and heartwarming in so many simple ways. It’s eye-opening, in the best ways.
