Christmas Traditions: Leaving Milk and Cookies for Santa

Lorelei A., Staff Writer

Although there are many traditions for this time of the year, leaving cookies and milk for Santa is a particularly well-known Christmas custom. The idea is that when Father Christmas shimmies down the chimney and delivers his presents he will want a little snack, which is understandable after traveling around the world in one night, but where exactly did the tradition come from? It was actually procured from the custom of hanging a stocking on the chimney, but the presents they were filled with were originally welcome gifts for St. Nicholas himself. The tradition of leaving milk and cookies instead begun in the 1930s. Next time you leave some yummy treats for Mr. Claus, be sure to leave some carrots for his reindeer as well.
