Pollution is one of the world’s largest problems. Pollution affects our air, oceans, and land in several significant ways. Some countries have so much pollution that people even buy fresh air in bottles to satisfy themselves. This is not just harming humans, it is affecting animals too. Every year, over one million seabirds and one hundred thousand sea mammals die from pollution. Just by not properly throwing trash, many lives are hurt physically. The main cause of all the pollution is littering. People litter every single day, and it is not safe for the future of our environment.

I notice that Cope has tons of trash circling its campus. Everyday people see candy wrappers, chip bags, and dried gum on the floor. Funny enough, nobody does anything to help clean up the mess. The only people who do are our custodians. We all know that their job is to tidy up the campus, therefore why are we making it harder for them? Just by leaving trash on the floor, a mess is being made. A great school prioritizes a clean campus, but our students are not doing anything to help. We have recycling bins and trash cans for a reason; use them. Our trash can be blown away into the sewers and into the ocean, throwing away your trash decreases the likelihood of more pollution.

There are many wonderful ways we could act on this problem. We could form a “green team” to help us reduce our litter habits. That team could launch a litter prevention campaign for the school. Cleaning up does not always have to be a hassle, it can be fun.
