Monday, May  1 was May Day. May Day is an ancient northern hemisphere spring festival that is celebrated in many cultures. In some traditions, the date celebrates the coming of summer, while in other cultures it celebrates the spring holiday. The earliest May Day originated from the Festival of Flora, the goddess of flowers, which also symbolizes spring. Different groups and cultures celebrate the day in different ways. For example, Americans and Europeans celebrate by dancing around the maypole and crowning the Queen of May. Other traditions include the giving of anonymous “May Baskets”, which are small baskets filled with sweets and flowers.
